13 Best Stellenbosch Wineries in South Africa for Wine Tastings & Travel

I was born in South Africa, as were my mother and grandmother, so going home was an emotional, heart-felt experience. Living now in San Diego—a place with a similar climate and vibe—my return to South Africa felt both familiar and unforgettable.

Exploring the best Stellenbosch wineries is one of the top ways to experience South Africa’s stunning Cape Winelands. The dramatic mountains, 17th-century Cape Dutch architecture, and world-class wines make Stellenbosch a must-visit. Beyond the vineyards, the town offers fantastic shopping, dining (incredible oysters!), and fresh local produce. We stayed at a winery resort—highly recommended if you want to soak in the experience. While many travelers opt for a day trip from Cape Town, staying for at least two nights in Stellenbosch allows you to fully enjoy the region’s wine tasting tours and scenic beauty.

Located just 40 minutes from Cape Town and about 30 minutes from Cape Town International Airport, Stellenbosch is South Africa’s premier wine region. Covering more than 30,000 acres, the area produces some of the country’s finest wines with over 150 wineries to explore. Thanks to its Mediterranean climate—cool, misty winters and warm, sunny summers—the conditions are ideal for cultivating grapes.

The Stellenbosch wine region is surrounded by breathtaking mountain ranges: Simonsberg, Papegaaiberg (Parrot Mountain), Jonkershoek, and Die Twee Pieke (The Twin Peaks). The area’s diverse geography, with elevations between 490 and 1,312 feet, plus ancient geology, makes for unique terroir. With over 50 distinct soil types—including decomposed granite, sandstone, and clay-based alluvial soils—Stellenbosch produces wines of exceptional character. It’s truly a paradise for wine lovers and nature enthusiasts alike.

According to James Suckling “South Africa is turning into a great white wine producer overall, and is perhaps even better with modern chenin blanc than the holy grail for the grape, France’s Loire Valley.”

Here’s a map of the 13 BEST Stellenbosch Wineries to help you decide which wineries to go to, perhaps group 2-3 together over a couple of days.

13 Best Stellenbosch Wineries

With over 150 wineries in and around Stellenbosch, South Africa, narrowing it down to the 13 best Stellenbosch wineries is no small task! To truly enjoy your experience, consider booking with a knowledgeable local guide. This way, you can focus on tasting (without worrying about driving on the left side of the road if you’re coming from the US!). For the best day, aim to visit two or three wineries—don’t try to cram too many in. Include both well-known and lesser-visited estates to experience the full depth of this beautiful winemaking region.

Did you know? South Africa ranks as the ninth largest wine producer in the world, contributing around 4% of global wine production. The local wine industry adds more than R55 billion to South Africa’s GDP. (source)

The Stellenbosch wine region includes ten primary areas: Franschhoek, Jamestown, Kayamandi, Klapmuts, Kylemore, Languedoc, Pniel, Robertsvlei, Stellenbosch, and Wemmershoek. The town of Stellenbosch itself serves as the vibrant heart of this wine-producing region. The greater Cape Winelands is made up of three key regions: Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl—with Stellenbosch leading in wine quality and innovation.

When you book a Stellenbosch wine tasting tour through your hotel or a guide, you can often customize the experience based on your wine preferences. We personally requested a mix of whites and reds and made sure to include Delaire Graff Estate on our list, thanks to its breathtaking gardens and sculpture collection. Enjoying an alfresco lunch there, framed by mountain views, was truly unforgettable.

Reserve or not to reserve your Tastings at Stellenbosch Wineries?

Depending on the season, reservations may be required. I’ve listed all the wineries’ websites so you can see their hours, holidays, and reservation requirements.  I will state, that the best experiences were those who knew we were coming and had set aside a knowledgeable guide for us. When it comes to wineries that have restaurants, again — it is best to reserve in advance.

1. Delaire Graff Estate

Thinking of diamonds? Yes—this is that Graff family! Delaire Graff Estate, located on the scenic Helshoogte Pass, is one of the most luxurious Stellenbosch wineries to visit. Known for its panoramic views of vineyards and mountains, this winery, resort, and spa delivers an exceptional experience. Founded by diamond jeweler Laurence Graff, the estate beautifully blends art, wine, and world-class hospitality. If you’re looking for something special, don’t miss the world’s smallest Graff Diamond Shop on site!

We didn’t stay overnight at Delaire Graff Estate, but we absolutely loved the educational wine tour and an unforgettable Michelin-starred lunch. Exploring the extensive sculpture garden and art collection was a highlight. Pro tip: the seafood here is incredible—especially the Saldanha Bay mussels and oysters.

For our Stellenbosch wineries adventure, I chose Lanzerac Winery Resort and Spa—and WOW! This was my top-rated winery for the trip because it truly offers the perfect stay. We stayed in a spacious cottage with our own pool, enjoyed daily breakfast, explored the scenic trails by bike, and indulged in a very generous wine tasting. 3. Waterford Estate Wines

I particularly love this Stellenbosch winery because it is such a gorgeous property — and they do chocolate pairings, which I’ve always heard was a big no-no. It was love at first bite. Though we did purchase some wines, I thought they were quite expensive compared to other wineries. We got caught up in the moment. The swans are quite aggressive if you go for that up-close shot.

Waterford Estate is set in the scenic Blaauwklippen Valley near Stellenbosch and has swiftly earned its reputation as one of Stellenbosch’s premier wineries since its establishment in 1998. It was founded by two passionate families with roots in the renowned Rust & Vrede wine estate. It has a rather diverse portfolio of wines with a focus on sustainable viticulture practices, combining traditional methods with innovative techniques.

Waterford Estate offers an array of wine-tasting experiences and unique and immersive experiences such as the Wine Drive Safari and the Porcupine Trail Walk. The Wine Drive Safari takes guests on a scenic tour of the vineyards, providing a close-up view of the winemaking process and the opportunity to taste wines amidst the picturesque landscape. The Porcupine Trail Walk offers a leisurely stroll through the estate’s natural habitat, allowing visitors to connect with nature while enjoying selected wine tastings along the way.

6. Tokara

Isn’t it wild and different from all the others? During our visit to Tokara in Stellenbosch, my sister and I loved the understated elegance of the winery. The focus on art and nature was immediately apparent, with a remarkable collection of contemporary artworks throughout the space. The staff, knowledgeable and friendly, guided us through the wine tasting, sharing insights about each wine without any pretense. There was a lack of ostentation, allowing us to focus solely on the wines and the beautiful surroundings. The restaurant offered a menu rooted in local flavors, paired impeccably with Tokara’s wines.

Tokara felt like a place where the quality of the wines and the natural beauty of the surroundings spoke for themselves. It was a refreshing change from more commercial wineries, allowing us to appreciate the art of winemaking in a relaxed and authentic setting. The visit was a reminder of how simplicity and authenticity can make a wine-tasting experience truly enjoyable.

Inside the wine-tasting room, the staff was friendly and helpful. They taught us about the wines without using sommie-complicated words, quite refreshing! Stellenbosch Wineries: FAQs

We were a little overwhelmed planning our first trip to Stellenbosch wineries, so you probably have plenty of questions too! Unless you’re a serious wine connoisseur or sommelier, it’s smart to combine your wine tasting with other experiences—this region is stunning year-round.

When is the best time to visit Stellenbosch wineries? The most popular season is autumn (their fall, which is spring in the U.S.), but that’s also the most crowded and expensive time. We recently visited in August (winter in South Africa) and found fantastic deals—plus, we often had the wineries nearly to ourselves. The town of Stellenbosch also boasts great restaurants, boutique shopping, and art galleries. Tip: book a table at The Fat Butcher—you’ll need a reservation!

How many wineries are in Stellenbosch?

There are at least 170 wineries, according to local experts.

What wines is Stellenbosch known for?

Think of Stellenbosch as South Africa’s Napa Valley. The region’s top wines often come from vineyards planted on alluvial fans of ancient granite mountains, giving many wines a distinctive mineral character. Fun fact: these granite mountains are around 600 million years old—three times older than Napa’s soils!

Top red varietals: Syrah, Merlot, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon
Top white varietals: Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier

Do Stellenbosch wineries accept US Dollars?

The official currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). U.S. dollars are not typically accepted. You can use Rands in neighboring Namibia and eSwatini as well. For broader travel in Southern and East Africa, having some USD on hand is always practical—we found it especially helpful in Kenya and Tanzania on safari.

What’s the difference between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek?

Both are beautiful, but Stellenbosch is a little more central, with a wider range of wineries and easier access (think Napa vs. Sonoma). It’s South Africa’s second oldest town (founded in 1685) and one of its most enchanting. Governor Simon van der Stel originally selected this valley in 1679 as a farming hub for passing ships bound for the Dutch East Indies. Today, Stellenbosch is also a culinary hotspot with three restaurants ranked in South Africa’s top ten (Terroir, Rust en Vrede, and Overture), along with being home to prestigious Stellenbosch University. Budget travelers will also find more options here than in Franschhoek.

Franschhoek is smaller and more touristy, with a compact town center and an intimate vibe. Its beautiful mountain backdrop and charming cafés make it a delightful day trip or overnight stop while exploring the Cape Winelands.

Conclusion: Best Stellenbosch Wineries

As you can see, there’s an incredible range of fabulous Stellenbosch wineries to explore—along with so many other experiences to enjoy in this unforgettable part of South Africa. Whether you visit a few top estates or all 13 from this guide, your journey through the Cape Winelands will be unforgettable.

From the rich history of Lanzerac Winery to the art-filled elegance of Delaire Graff Estate, or savoring chocolates and wines at Waterford Estate—each winery has its own story and flavor. The sustainable practices at Babylonstoren and the old-world charm of Meerlust Estate also add depth to the experience. No matter your style—romantic getaway, wine weekend with friends, or solo adventure—this is one of the best wine regions in the world to explore.

I’d love to hear which wineries you visit or which ones you would add to the list! Feel free to share your favorites in the comments.
