FAQ: Cairns vs. Port Douglas – Everything You Need to Know

Still have questions? Here are some of the most common things travelers ask when deciding between Cairns or Port Douglas for their Great Barrier Reef adventure!

1. Is it cheaper to stay in Cairns or Port Douglas?

Cairns is generally more budget-friendly, with cheaper accommodation, food, and tour options. Port Douglas leans more upscale, with boutique resorts and fine dining.

2. Can you swim in the ocean in Cairns and Port Douglas?

  • Cairns: No—there are crocodiles and marine stingers. Swim at the Esplanade Lagoon instead.
  • Port Douglas: Yes! Four Mile Beach has stinger nets during jellyfish season (Nov–May).

3. Which has better access to the Great Barrier Reef—Cairns or Port Douglas?

Both offer incredible reef access, but it depends on your preference:

  • Cairns: More tour departures, including budget-friendly options and larger boats.
  • Port Douglas: Smaller, more personalized tours with fewer crowds.

4. How long should I stay in each place?

  • If choosing one between Cairns or Port Douglas: 3–4 days is ideal.
  • If splitting time: 2 days in Cairns (for nightlife & city fun) + 3 days in Port Douglas (for beaches & luxury).

5. What’s the best way to get from Cairns to Port Douglas?

The Captain Cook Highway (1-hour drive) is a stunning coastal route. Renting a car is the best option, but shuttle buses and private transfers are also available.

6. Is there a difference in the reef experience between the two?

Not really—both have access to pristine reef sites. However, Port Douglas tours tend to visit the Agincourt Reef, which is known for its incredible visibility.

7. What’s the best time of year to visit?

The dry season (May–October) offers the best weather and reef visibility. Avoid November–March if you don’t like humidity, rain, or marine stingers.

Cairns wins here! It has more bars, nightclubs, and late-night restaurants. Port Douglas is more relaxed, with cocktail lounges and early-night dining.

Yes! Multi-day Great Barrier Reef cruises depart from Cairns and sometimes include stops near Port Douglas. We also did a cruise through Tasmania & New Zealand, which was an incredible way to explore the region!
