If you’re dreaming of stunning Mediterranean beaches, charming whitewashed villages, and endless sunshine, a Costa del Sol road trip is the perfect way to experience southern Spain’s coastline. While Spain has a fantastic train network, here’s the thing—many of the best coastal towns aren’t well-served by rail. That’s exactly why we (and you should) chose to rent a car for this trip. Having our own wheels for our Costa del Sol Road trip gave us total flexibility—no rushing to catch trains, no relying on bus schedules, just the freedom to stop wherever we wanted (which was often).
And here’s where we broke the travel-planning rules—we didn’t pre-book all of our hotels. I’ll admit, I don’t usually recommend winging it, especially in peak season, but for this trip, it worked out fine because we were flexible and we knew which hotels we wanted to stay in with a back up for each. That said, if you’re traveling in the summer or have your eye on a boutique stay or Parador, book in advance to avoid the dreaded “fully booked” sign and wasted time.

Pro Tip: Driving in Gibraltar can be tight and stressful—think narrow roads, roundabouts, and limited parking. If you’re not staying overnight, it’s often easier to park in La Línea (on the Spanish side) and walk across the border. The main sights are all walkable from there!

Pro Tip: Don’t miss the stunning views of the La Pepa Bridge, one of the longest and highest bridges in Spain. Designed by Spanish architect Javier Manterola, it connects Cádiz to the mainland and looks especially dramatic at sunset from the waterfront promenade.

Seville’s a perfect finale and a convenient place to fly home from, with international connections out of Seville Airport (SVQ). Excellent trains to just about anywhere in Spain from here too.

For us, the key places we really sank into were Nerja, Estepona, and Cádiz—each had its own unique vibe and was totally worth a longer stay. Other towns we stayed in mostly to avoid driving at night, and they ended up being lovely little surprises.

If you’re coming from outside the EU (like the US or Canada), yes—you’ll need an IDP along with your valid home driver’s license. You can get one easily through AAA (USA) or CAA (Canada) for around $25.00. PS – you don’t need to be an AAA member to get one.
What kind of car should I rent for a Costa del Sol road trip?
Definitely opt for a compact car with great fuel efficiency—it’ll be easier to park in small towns (we had to pull the mirrors in in Cádiz) and navigate narrow streets. Manual transmissions are more common in Spain, so make sure to request an automatic if needed.
What’s the deal with money—cards or cash?
First, Spain is in the EU so think Euros. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, especially in cities (Apple Pay and Google Wallet are the easiest and safest ways to pay – no cards to worry about). But smaller towns, beach bars, and parking machines often require cash. Always carry some Euros on hand—especially coins for public toilets or toll roads. I always get them upon arrival at the airport ATM or near my first stop. You can Google ATM locations.

Start your Costa del Sol road trip in Valencia (VLC) or Alicante (ALC). End in Jerez (XRY) or Seville (SVQ) if you’re finishing in Cádiz. Málaga (AGP) is another great option if you’re doing a tighter loop. We flew out of Sevilla because we love that city and it’s quite close to Cadiz. We spent lunch and an afternoon in Jerez along the way.
