1. Planning Your Trip Tips
Effective trip planning ensures a smoother and more enjoyable travel experience, allowing you to make the most of your time and resources.
- Research your destination thoroughly, including its culture, language, and local attractions. Use sites like Google, TripAdvisor, Lonely Planet, to start your searches. Join Facebook groups dedicated to your specific destination.
- Create a detailed itinerary, including locations, accommodations, transportation, and activities. Through your research, you will compile a list of potential activities. I use Google Docs for this, a place to paste all of my ideas. Watch my tutorial here.
- Create your budget: Determine how much you want to spend per day per person. Some areas may be more expensive than others, as well as activities while others may just include a free walking tour, or chilling on the beach. If you are able to go during off or shoulder seasons, costs will be lower and you’ll enjoy more options with fewer crowds.

2. Packing tips and essentials
Packing essentials are the backbone of a well-prepared trip, ensuring you have everything you need while keeping your luggage manageable. From clothing suitable for the destination’s climate to essential documents and versatile accessories, thoughtful packing makes your travel experience smoother and stress-free.
- Make a Packing List: Before you start packing, create a comprehensive packing list. This helps you stay organized and ensures you don’t forget any essential items. Include clothing, toiletries, electronics, travel documents, and any specific items for your destination.
- Pack Light: Resist the temptation to overpack. Choose versatile clothing [think neutral] pieces that can be mixed and matched to create various outfits. Stick to the essentials, and leave behind items you can easily purchase at your destination, like toiletries or extra clothes. And remember, shoes take up a LOT of space! Bring versatile shows that work across your wardrobe. I’ve leaned on Tumi and Samsonite for durability and roominess.
- Use Packing Techniques: Maximize suitcase space by using packing techniques like rolling clothes instead of folding, packing cubes to keep items organized, and placing heavier items at the bottom of your luggage to distribute weight evenly. This helps prevent wrinkles and saves space.
- Plugs: Most European hotels have only a couple plugs in the rooms. And, Europe, Africa and most countries are 220-260 volt, meaning you will BLOW out whatever you plug in if it’s a USA device. I know Mac says it does this automatically, but guess what? My son’s device only charges to 80% max ever now since his trip to Thailand, and it won’t hold the charge. In fact, we shut down our entire floor at the Ritz Carlton in Santiago, Chile and almost destroyed our two Macs. Smoke barreling out, sparks everywhere. Now, we travel with a down-volt converter and an array of plugs. We also use a power surge strip and plug all of our devices into one strip.

3. Transportation Tips
- Plan Ahead: Are you planning to drive on your trip? Rely solely on trains? or perhaps taxis and Ubers? Know before you go! Maybe the best way to get around is by renting a car. Research and plan your transportation options well in advance. This includes booking flights, trains, or bus tickets early to secure better prices and seat availability. Familiarize yourself with local public transportation systems and schedules at your destination, and consider using travel apps for real-time updates. Sign up for apps like Trainline or Omio and check out apps like Rome2Rio.
Renting a car? Make sure you know whether you need an IDP (International Driver’s Permit) which you can get from AAA.com. Many car rental agencies also charge for different location dropoff, especially for starting in one country and ending in another.
- Pack Light and Smart: Traveling with minimal luggage makes navigating various modes of transportation much easier. Opt for a versatile, comfortable wardrobe, and use packing techniques to maximize space. Additionally, pack essential items in your carry-on bag, including travel documents, medications, a change of clothes, and chargers, to ensure you’re prepared for any delays or lost luggage.
- Stay Safe and Secure: Be vigilant with your belongings, especially in crowded or unfamiliar places. Keep important documents, like your passport and travel insurance, in a secure, waterproof pouch. Use locks for your luggage, and consider using a money belt or hidden pouch for valuables. Additionally, have a backup plan for transportation disruptions, such as knowing alternative routes or nearby accommodations in case of unexpected delays or cancellations.

4. Buy Travel Insurance
The best investment you hope you’ll never have to use. I broke my finger in Cape Town last year. A doctor came to my hotel room, drove me to the emergency room where I racked up a heap of imaging bills, the splinting, and medication for pain. It more than paid for the cost of the insurance which covered everything. My son’s friend broke his neck in Thailand last year. He wasn’t covered and the operation had to be paid for in advance. No insurance. $100,000 out of pocket. There are many excellent travel insurers, but I use SquareMouth because they give me so many options (aggregate) from a lot of different companies and different kinds of policies.
5. Accommodation Considerations
- Start with Google: Google’s hotel search gives you the list and the map along with lots of filters. If you plan on walking more than driving, look for the “yellow” areas on the map which indicate ‘old towns’. Try to stay within those zones. On a budget? Then find the highest-end five-star hotels on the map and then search that area. Typically those hotels are in prime locations.
- Research Thoroughly: Before booking, read reviews, check the location’s proximity to attractions, and consider factors like safety and cleanliness.
- Consider Your Budget: Determine your accommodation budget in advance, and explore options like hotels, hostels, vacation rentals, or even unique stays like boutique guesthouses or eco-lodges. I try to stick to a single resource like Booking.com because they cover hotels, apartments, and hostels and I can keep track with just a single login. Also, 3-star hotels are BETTER in Europe than they are in the US.
- Book in Advance: Secure your accommodation early, especially during peak travel seasons, to ensure availability and potentially lower prices.
- Prioritize Amenities: Choose accommodations that align with your needs, whether it’s free Wi-Fi, breakfast, kid-friendliness, a fitness center, or pet-friendly options, to enhance your stay.
6. Safety Precautions
Once, when we were in Mexico, my brother-in-law almost got robbed by a sweet couple with a spray bottle of ‘bird poop’. They sprayed it on him then while he was distracted by being so grossed out, they offered to help, giving them access to touch him and get his wallet out of his pocket!
- Stay Aware: Be vigilant of your surroundings and trust your instincts; if a situation feels uncomfortable, remove yourself from it.
- Secure Your Belongings: Keep valuables in a hotel safe, use anti-theft bags, and avoid displaying expensive items in public. I put AirTags in everything!
- Emergency Preparedness: Have essential contacts, like local emergency numbers and the nearest embassy, stored in your phone and in Google Docs where trusted family or friends can also access the information. Carry a basic first-aid kit and a photocopy of important documents in case of loss or theft.
- Local Insights: Seek advice from Facebook Groups, locals or your accommodation staff regarding safe areas, potential scams, and cultural norms to respect during your travels.
7. Money-Saving Strategies
Even when we aren’t on a budget, we’re frugal travelers! Read this 7th tip in the 10 Essential Travel Tips to Guarantee a Stress-Free Journey. We love public transportation and walking. It’s the best way to get to know a city with an exercise bonus!
- Set a Budget: Determine your daily spending limit and stick to it by tracking expenses through mobile apps or journals.
- Local Cuisine: Opt for local eateries and street food to experience authentic cuisine at a fraction of the cost of touristy restaurants.
- Use Public Transportation: Utilize affordable public transportation options such as buses, trams, or subways instead of costly taxis or private tours. And, it’s often faster! Especially in big cities.
- Discounts and Coupons: Look for discounts, coupons, and city passes for attractions, museums, and tours to save on entrance fees and activities.
- Laundry: We can usually find a local laundry (Google search) to do our washing, but when staying for just a couple of days, we use the sink or the shower. You only need some clips and laundry tabs which take up no room at all.
8. Communication and Navigation Tools
Some of these tips are based on the type of trip you’re taking. On the SIM Card, check first with your Mobile Phone carrier. I have T-Mobile and haven’t ever had to get a SIM as they’ve covered almost all of my usage for free, even in countries like Kenya, Tanzania, and Turkey! Europe is always included.
- Learn key phrases: This fosters cultural appreciation but also facilitates smoother interactions with locals, enhances the overall travel experience, and creates a sense of connection and respect between travelers and the host community. Greet people with “Hello”, learn “Thank you”, “Check please”, “Where is the bathroom?” and “How much is this?” for starters.
- Smartphone Apps: Download travel apps for maps, translation, and navigation to help you find your way around and bridge language barriers.
- Offline Maps: Save offline maps of your destination to navigate without an internet connection.
- Language Translation Apps: Use apps that translate languages in real-time to communicate with locals more effectively. I happen to like Google’s but there are several options.
- Local SIM Card or International Roaming: Consider getting a local SIM card or an international roaming plan to stay connected and access the internet while abroad. I now only use Airalo’s which has been fabulous in every country so far, even places like Vietnam!
- Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot: Carry a portable Wi-Fi hotspot device for secure and reliable internet access during your travels. If you get a Sim, use that as your hot spot.
Optional for 10 Essential Travel Tips to Guarantee a Stress-Free Journey
- Physical Maps and Guidebooks: Have physical maps and guidebooks as backup, especially in remote areas with limited connectivity. Mark up a map from the hotel concierge. Or if you’re at an AB&B type place, then stop in at a hotel and ask for one or a local travel bureau. People like to help so don’t be afraid to ask.
- GPS Device: If you plan on extensive outdoor activities, a dedicated GPS device can be a reliable navigation tool.
- Emergency Beacon: For remote or adventurous trips, consider carrying an emergency beacon or satellite communicator for safety.
- Language Phrasebook: Carry a language phrasebook or cheat sheet to assist with basic communication.
- VPN (Virtual Private Network): Use a VPN to ensure secure and private internet access, especially when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks while traveling. A VPN also allows you to bypass geo-restrictions and access content from your home country.
9. Health and Wellness While Traveling
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially in hot or dry climates, and limit alcohol and caffeine intake that can dehydrate you. I use Nuun hydration tablets for electrolytes and immunity boosts.
- Healthy Eating: Seek out balanced, nutritious meals to maintain your energy levels and support your immune system. Be cautious with street food and tap water in regions with water quality concerns. To avoid getting “Hangry”, carry protein bars or snacks when you venture out.
- Physical Activity: Incorporate physical activity into your travel routine to stay active and reduce the impact of long periods of sitting during flights or road trips.
- Rest and Sleep: Prioritize adequate rest and quality sleep to prevent travel fatigue and jet lag. Consider bringing earplugs, an eye mask, and travel pillows to improve sleep quality.
10. Money, Exchange Rates, and Foreign Transaction Fees
This may require some advance planning while you read through all of the 10 Essential Travel Tips to Guarantee a Stress-Free Journey.
- Get a Credit Card that doesn’t impose international transaction fees. Many banks charge around 3% for currency conversion and an additional fee (typically about $5) for overseas card usage, which can accumulate significantly during extended trips or frequent international spending. To minimize unnecessary expenses, we recommend carrying debit and credit cards that offer zero international transaction fees. After all, who wants to give banks more money? I use Amex Platinum, Schwab, and Sapphire Preferred. These also come with other travel benefits like TSA coverage, access to airport lounges, lost or delayed luggage, and other features.
- Do NOT Exchange Currency in Your Home Country – I get asked this a lot! We recommend waiting until you arrive at your destination and withdrawing money from a local ATM. Remember that handy debit card without international transaction fees? Well, it becomes especially advantageous in this scenario. For those who prefer to have some local currency upon arrival, most airports feature ATMs in the terminals. While these may have slightly higher ATM fees, you’ll usually receive the current market exchange rate for your currency conversion.
- Research whether the country you’re visiting accepts your currency. We were delighted and surprised to find out that Turkey, Kenya and Tanzania all accept US dollars! If this is the case for you, then take lots of ones. You will NOT get change back in dollars if you decide to tip with a $20. It’s also easier to leave dollars for your housekeeper or tip the bell-person.
- Carry only one or two cards when you’re out during the day. Don’t carry duplicate cards. My husband might carry the Visa and I’ll take the Amex. If one of us gets robbed, we still have the other card to use. Recently, I’ve not carried ANY cards, relying solely on my ApplePay (This did not work out as well in Asia though.)
